Having graduated from The University of Manchester, I began my career in the oil and gas industry at an Aberdeen-based mudlogging company. In the ensuing years I gained a very comprehensive grounding in the industry.
I was exposed to many of the major oil provinces in the North Sea area including the Southern Permian Basin, the Central Graben, the Inner & Outer Moray Firth; as well as the Viking Graben in the Norwegian sector plus the Irish Atlantic Approaches.
This included HPHT wells utilising managed pressure drilling, penetrating strata deformed by salt diapirism, reservoirs with various trap types, containing a wide range of APIs and gas sourness.
All this helped to confirm that my interest lay in the geological side of industry - the rationale behind why we drill where we do, why we use the well paths we do, why targets are considered to be good prospects and the reasons why not all are successful.
This led to me developing a career as a wellsite geologist, to acquiring chartership from the Geological Society of London and to becoming self-employed.
